WEEK 98 FOR THE HOSTAGES IN GAZA
WEEK 98 FOR THE HOSTAGES IN GAZA
The 12 photos below show the Auschwitz-Birkenau subcamp Bobrek, where my father's engineering background enabled him to avoid the gas chambers by working as a slave laborer for the Berlin firm Siemens-Schuckertwerke AG, making dies for parts for German submarines. These photos, taken 40 years apart, show the Siemens plant at Bobrek in 1944, and again in 1984 when my father returned with me for my 1985 Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine cover story "Journey To My Father's Holocaust." The man accompanying us and holding a folder is the Polish historian Franciszek Piper of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
